About
The Bard Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) and Career Development Office sponsor Community Action Awards that help cover costs associated with unpaid summer internships that support pre-professional experiences. Student identify an internship site and apply for funding.
Eligible internships address issue(s) related to the broad field of civic engagement, including education, government, social justice, human rights, media, public policy, the arts and social entrepreneurship.
Awards
10 $3,000 awards for 8 week internships at 30 hours a week
15 $1,500 awards for 4 week internships at 30 hours a week
Some smaller amounts of funding are available to cover expenses related to unpaid internships.
Please note that the award IS taxed.
Where can I intern?
Students secure internships on their own but can receive support to find an internship from CCE, the Career Development Office, their faculty, and the alumni or family network. Just email

to schedule a brainstorming meeting.
Where have students interned in the past?
Over 30 undergraduates received awards in 2019.
Sites have included Human Rights Foundation (Turkey), Capital Good Fund (Rhode Island), Future of Diplomacy Project at the Kennedy School (Massachusetts), Make the Road (NY), ArteEast (NY), African Center for Migration and Society (South Africa), Suffolk County District Attorney (NY), OYE Honduras Youth Empowerment (Honduras), Let’s Get Ready (New York) and the National Park Service (California), Worker Justice Center (Kingston), Historic Red Hook (Red Hook).
Deadline
The CAA has two deadlines to accommodate student needs.
First round applications are due Friday, April 3
Second round applications are due Friday, April 24.
Application turnaround is approximately three weeks post deadline.
CAA Requirements
• Award recipients are required to sign a contract agreeing to the terms of the award.
• Award recipients are required to submit two blog posts during the summer.
• Award recipients participate in the CAA Engagement Series during the fall semester.
• Awards are only given to current Bard students in good standing who intend to return for at least one term after completing the internship.
• Awards do not support tuition or payment for any academic or internship programs or internship placement agencies or programs.
• Supervisors must submit final evaluations assessing student performance upon completion of the internship.
• CAA recipients will meet with a member of the CCE or CDO team to discuss the evaluation and their experience during the fall semester.
Application
Applicants should be prepared to submit the following:
• Resume
• 200 word description of the internship site including website links, contact information
• Site supervisor form confirming the internship
• 400 word description of internship responsibilities and goals for the internship.
• Itemized budget plan (optional)
• Reference
Students must submit official documentation from the internship site supervisor confirming the students hire for a 4-8 week summer internships with 30 or more hours a week. Applications without site confirmations will be considered during the review process but funding will not be released until confirmation is submitted in writing from the internship site.
