Community Action Awards: Bringing theory to practice in communities locally, nationally and internationally.

The Bard Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) supports student efforts to engage with communities locally, nationally and internationally by providing funding to participate in internships that address issues impacting people and communities around the world.

Nearly 60 undergraduates received awards in 2015. Worldwide internships placements were at community organizations; local, state or national government agencies and offices; international governmental and non-governmental organizations; media, public policy, and non-profit organizations; and educational programs.

Internship sites have included Human Rights Foundation (Turkey), Capital Good Fund (Rhode Island), Future of Diplomacy Project at the Kennedy School (Massachusetts), Andalus Institute for Tolerance and Anti-Violence (Cairo), Make the Road (NY), ArteEast (NY), African Center for Migration and Society (South Africa), Suffolk County District Attorney (NY), OYE Honduras Youth Empowerment (Honduras), Let’s Get Ready (New York) and the National Park Service (California).

Each summer CCE provides awards to support student internships, pre-professional experiences, and community action projects. Internships and projects should address issue(s) related to the broad field of civic engagement, including education, government, justice, human rights, media, public policy, the arts and social entrepreneurship. Maximum award is $3,000. Students are expected to work at the internship site full-time for four to eight weeks.

Deadline

First round applications due Monday, March 28; second round applications due Friday, April 29.

Additional Requirements

Award recipients are required to submit two blog posts during the summer and participate in the CAA Speaker Series. Awards are only given to current Bard students in good standing who intend to return for at least one term after completing the internship. Awards are not designed to support tuition for academic or internship programs.

Application

Applicants should be prepared to submit the following:
Resume, description of site including website links, site supervisor form, itemized budget plan and reference.

Students must submit official documentation from the internship site supervisor confirming the students hire for a 4-8 week summer internship. Applications without site confirmations will not be considered. Students can use the attached document as a template.
